New books!

5 April, 2010

I requested and received the following from the lovely people at Canongate and Michael Joseph (Penguin) to review:

Our Tragic Universe by Scarlett Thomas – because I loved The End of Mr. Y. Can’t wait to read this.

Angelology by Danielle Trussoni – because apparently angels are the new vampires. I’m in the middle of this book and it’s reminding me of Anne Rice’s The Witching Hour, one of my favourite books. I like!

And I bought the following because I just had to:

If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino – because it’s one of David Mitchell’s inspirations.

I also finished watching Supernatural season 4 which was thrilling until the very last episode. I cannot wait to see the next season. And there is news that season 6 has been approved. Yay!

  1. Hi, chasingbawa. I am absolutely delighted that you are enjoying Angelology so far. Let me know how it turns out. I am wondering if I should get it too.

I’m pretty impressed with it so far, and I love Trussoni’s writing style. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book well into the night and forgotten what time it is.

I’ve been curious about The End of Mr Y for a long time. It sounds awesome and some authors I love recommended it (Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, Douglas Coupland), but at the same time I worried it might be a bit…new agey? Not that there’s anything wrong with that; it’s just generally not my thing 😛 Do you think I should give it a go?

And oh, The Witching Hour! ❤ Such a great book.

I didn’t feel The End of Mr. Y was new agey (it’s not my thing either). It was very strange with bits of quantum science and philosophy and a mystery at the heart of the novel. It was nothing like the books I’d read before. I can see why all three authors would like it. And I do think you should give it a go! Go on!

  3. If anything, I thought The End of Mr Y was a bit science-y rather than new-age-y, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I’ve just started watching “Supernatural” on disc; at first I found the constant succession of Girl-of-the-Week-Who-Needs-to-be-Rescued a bit annoying; but that seems to be easing up and the creepy-bits are delicious. Given that I’m watching about an episode a week, it sounds like I’ve got a lot of good viewing ahead.

Definitely science-y which was one of the reasons I liked it so much.

Oh, Supernatural just gets better and better. The bigger story arcs and the relationship between the brothers are really brilliant. Can’t wait to watch Season 5!
