Persephone Secret Santa
15 December, 2010
This is my first year participating in the Persephone Secret Santa (or any bookish secret santa) so I was mega excited when not one but TWO packages popped through the post from Persephone Books! And what was inside?
Lovely Claire from Paperback Reader thoughtfully chose Minnie’s Room by Mollie Panter-Downes because I had previously read Good Evening, Mrs. Craven: The Wartime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes and loved it. And she also sent me To Bed With Grand Music by Marghanita Laski which, unknowingly, is also one of the titles I was greatly interested in when it was published last year. Thank you Claire, you’re a mind reader:)
I’m just waiting anxiously to see whether my Santee on the other side of the pond will get her present in time for Christmas. The post isn’t as reliable as one would like it to be especially with the weird weather, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Ooh – exciting! To bed is such a gripping book, tho with such an unlikeable main character. I read it about this time last year.
You took such beautiful pictures of your presents!

Athat proves it: a real reader reads just about anything. Even minds.
You’re a lucky grrl; enjoy your loot!

Yay! Delighted you are pleased with them, Sakura. I remembered you had enjoyed Mrs Craven so Minnie’s Room was an easy choice. Our tastes overlap when it comes to feminist fiction & I wanted something like A Very Great Profession or Daddy’s Gone A-hunting, both of which you chose for yourself; I went for To Bed With Grand Music as I found it extremely thought-provoking earlier this year from a woman’s perspective.
I hope you enjoy them both!

How lovely and generous of Claire 😀 I haven’t read either book, but I’ve enjoyed both authors in the past. Happy reading!

Beautiful books! I can’t wait to read your reviews 🙂

Such a nice bit of extra bookish love from Claire! Love how more than a few people cheated a little with extra books or goodies. Persephone readers are a thoughtful bunch! Happy holidays!

Sounds like it’s been a lovely holiday for you already. I’m so glad to have found your blog through the Persephone Secret Santa exchange, Sakura! Happy Holidays.

What a great present! I haven’t read either of those. I hope you enjoy them both!

Gorgeous books! I’ve yet to read a Persephone, but I think 2011 will be my year. By the way, I really enjoy your blog!

I’ve read To Bed With Grand Music, but not the other. I find Laski’s writing so interesting; each of the two books I’ve read by her (the other being The Victorian Chaise Longue) were so different. Now I have Little Boy Lost and I can’t wait to read the third one by her. Anyway, lucky you to receive two Persephones! Happy reading!

What a great idea… secret Santa. Persephone books sure are a handsome bunch. Do you know whether they have translated works?

I’m not sure they have any translated work. I think most of their books are by English authors and with some American authors. It’s worth checking out their website as it has lots of information.

TWO Persephones! Lucky! I haven’t read either of those but I loved Good Evening, Mrs. Craven, so I really want to read Minnie’s Room. I look forward to reading your comments about these two.
